CHAPTER ELEVEN
THE STANDS WERE FILLING rapidly around Tess and Sam. Another Saturday night at yet another dirt track.
Tess opened her needlework bag and removed her cross-stitch project. She was finishing a throw pillow for Michael depicting a racetrack scene. When she’d started, she told herself it would make a nice memento if he ended up at Stanford. Oh, who was she kidding? Still, it was hard to let go of her dream.
The next pillow on her list would be a Christmas present for Sam. She always tried to give something personal and handmade to the people she cared about. He was becoming a friend.
And maybe more? She hoped so, but he hadn’t tried to kiss her again. Maybe tonight would be the night.
Tess pushed the thought from her mind. Still, she found herself smiling. She couldn’t help but be impressed by the way Sam had forged ahead in life and done things his own way. And admire the way he’d given back to the community and taken Michael under his wing. And feel a little thrill of excitement when he seemed totally focused on her.
Glancing sideways, she caught Sam watching her, his smile bemused.
“What?” she asked.
“You’re an intriguing dichotomy, Tess.”
She chuckled. “And here I thought I was boring.”
“Somewhat predictable at times, but never boring.”
Wrinkling her nose, she said, “I’m not sure I like being considered predictable.”
“Reliable?”
“Great. Now I sound like a used car.”
“Then how would you describe yourself?”
“Hmm. I do what needs to be done. I take care of the people I love….”
“Who takes care of you?”
“Me? Nobody, really.” The concept took her aback. “I guess I take care of myself.”
“Not nearly enough. I know you’ve had a lot of responsibility raising Michael mostly on your own. Now you deserve to have some fun.”
“I do have fun. I’m having fun right now.”
“I got the feeling you were killing time.”
Tilting her head, she considered his statement. Smiling guiltily, she said, “Yes, I guess I am. Truth be told, I could use a little less time at the races.”
“Then do something else.”
“And miss Michael race? No way. I have to be here for him.”
“If Michael wasn’t a concern and you could be anywhere else, where would you be on a Saturday night?”
Tess closed her eyes. It was a fantasy she hadn’t contemplated in a long time. “I’d be in Venice, riding in a gondola. The night air would be cool and damp, with the music of a mandolin floating across the water.”
She didn’t tell him there was usually an unnamed man in the gondola with her. But tonight, she recognized him in her daydream. It was Sam.
She opened her eyes. “But that’s probably not exciting enough for you.”
“Why not? It sounds great.”
“No horsepower, no loud engines, no competition.”
Sam cupped her cheek with his hand. His eyes were dark and unreadable. “There’s a time and a place for competition, Tess. And there’s a time to savor the sweet things in life, slowly and completely.”
Her cheeks warmed. The kind of savoring he mentioned was another of her fantasies.
